These GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) radios are lightweight, palm sized, state-of-the-art communications devices, providing a maximum spread of 28 miles. They also feature NOAA weather alerts and caller name display. This package comes complete with two radios and two NiMH rechargeable batteries as well as a dual-bay charging cradle.
Depending on your location, you can stay in contact with family and friends up to 28 miles away. |
Be safe, not sorry with these GMRS radios. Their long-range communication capabilities means you're never out of touch, and two-way radio communications can ensure your safety when cell phone signals fade and fall short. (Actual range may vary depending on environmental and terrain conditions; see chart at right.) Use them at sporting events, to stay in contact with friends while camping, hiking, skiing or biking, or in conjunction with a neighborhood watch to ensure vital communications.
The GMR2889-2CK radios offer a unique Caller Name Dispaly that appears on the LCD, enabling you to see who is calling before you key up. When hunting, fishing or just need absolute quiet, the Silent Mode setting will alert you with a flashing display and the radios will also vibrate to remind you that you missed a call. When in the weather radio alert mode, the GMR2889-2CK radios will monitor NOAA National Weather Service channels, checking the alert status every seven seconds ready to alert you in the event of a weather emergency.
The radios have a unique circuitry designed to dramatically extend the life of your batteries. If there is no transmission of incoming call for three seconds, your radio automatically switches to the Power Save mode. They also have a Power Boost key that, when pressed, can temporarily increase the power output and achieve maximum communication range.

Extremely poor range
I purchased these for a car caravan summer trip in 2008 where we would not have the use of cell phones due to some of the remote locations out in the western U.S. The claim of a range of 28 miles is absolutely ridiculous. Typically 1 watt = 1 mile under good conditions. I figured that even if I got ¼ of that range it would still be good, it was not. We have very poor communications car to car even when we were 200 feet apart. Broken and dropped transmissions not to mention poor battery life (even when I charged them every night in the hotel). I'm not sure how Uniden is getting away with the performance claims on this product. I was sorely disappointed with these and I'm a Uniden fan and have been for years.
Good call
I just bought these for some snowboarding in Colorado. 9 of us went out there and were spread out all over the mountain. My radios were never out of contact and were always able to make a call. Also, I should note that we used them all day and they never ran out of battery as long as I charged them at night.
My only gripe is that the belt clip is too lose for extreme sports, so I had to put it on my jacket.
Great radios, glad I bought them.
Great product
They give nice range about a mile and the half in the city. At The Park you can get few miles pretty easly. A lot of features and the privacy codes which i like in these radios. These radios pretty easy to use, nice clear voice and so far i never had any enterferance. For the price you get realy awesome radios. Plus transmitting on FRS channels are FREE !!! That counts too.
